Meet the Captain

Ahoy this is Pirate Girl 101.

My name is Merinda Nunez Astles.
I'm married to the man of my dreams, Steve, and between us we have
5 fabulous children and 1 grandboy.
I have been teaching for 23 years (1st, 2nd, 3rd grade).
I recently quit my teaching position in the public school system where I grew up (and spent all 23 teaching years). Steve and I felt God calling me to teach in the Christian school at our church. So that's where I am currently teaching 3rd grade. And for the record.....
BEST MOVE EVER!
There is nothing like being able to combine my love for Jesus
and my love of teaching!
We (my mom and extended family) live in the beautiful, small town of Fernandina Beach, Florida. It is on Amelia Island, right on the Atlantic Ocean. Our town has a very rich history, it has been under 8 flags, named after Princess Amelia, and inhabited by pirates
(that's where the pirates come in).
Our mascot (for our 1 high school and 1 middle school) is a pirate, so everyone here grew up wanting to be a pirate. Me included. When it came time to name my business and my blog, it just seemed natural to name it something piratey :)
If you are still reading this, I applaud you and I really hope that you will consider becoming a blog follower, visit often and find many things that are useful to you and your kids.
Godspeed!

  1. Hi. Just stumbled across your blog and my story is similar to yours except I live in Australia. I'm back in 2nd grade again after being in first grade for 2 years and I agree with you - i'm loving it too. It is an awesome age. I'm also a Christian and teach in a Christian school so I will definitely be following you and hopefully using some of your units too. Thank you for making your Biblical units. God Bless, Lynelle in Australia

  2. Lynelle, thank you so much for your sweet comments! I love hearing from other believers and how they are doing the work of Christ. Be sure to check out the FREE LOOT tab, there are several scripture packets that are free. Thanks again for stopping by!

  3. Hi Merinda! I just stumbled on your site as well! I teach 5th grade at a Christian school in the Central Valley of California. I am excited to see Christian units on your site too! Thank you for sharing God's Word with others even if you can't teach it in your school! I just downloaded your Feb. and March Memory Verse Bundles. Do you have others for other months? I would love to have them for each month! Thank you, again, for sharing. Blessings, Joy, from Fresno, CA

  4. Hi Joy,
Thank you so much for stopping by. I have packets for every Monday since Feb. I just got so lazy about bundling them. They are all here on the blog if you want to dig through. I'll start bundling again:) Thanks again!!

  5. Hi Merinda,
I have been following your blog for a few months now and love your Biblical units. I am an SLP in a public school but also teach 5th/6th grade faith formation and love your materials. I am so pleased to see the number of Christian bloggers. Even though you may not be able to use your units directly, your actions are a light and example to others.

  6. Merinda,

I just saw your blog for the first time this morning! Similar to you, I have been teaching for 23 years and after 13 years in Kindergarten, have found myself back in 2nd grade. I love it!! But, also feel like I am starting over! After teaching in several public schools, I have been blessed to teach in a Christian school (where my children attend) for the last 10 years. I am excited about spending some time on your blog. God bless you!!
